JC polyomavirus belongs to the Human polyomavirus 2 species.

Infections of JC polyomavirus starts in gastrointestinal tract, then the tubular epithelial cells in the kidneys. They can cross the blood-brain barrier into the central nervous system, they were found in the CNS of PML patients.
